figuring out how to talk with my zionist relatives about palestine…
it’s been and will continue to be a very hard road, and one which, despite such strong feelings of frustration and betrayal, i so hope to approach with compassion and tolerance. my thinking about it has lead me to some resources which, given the chance, i would use as starting points for a diologue.
my hopes for this dialogue would be for them to read these pieces and respond thoughtfully, challenging any specific points that they thought were wrong, or that they thought came from a place other than the desire for true peace through justice. my fear for this dialogue is that it would degenerate into name-calling and cynical bickering, where we are both mutually pigeonholed by the other into our respective corners, trust being eroded further than it already has.
so i’ve compiled those resources here. i think they are a pretty good starting place (listed here in no particular order):
- Starhawk’s excellent piece on seeing from the edge, Heresies in Pursuit of Peace: Thoughts on Israel/Palestine
- Maureen Meehan’s 1999 piece in the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, Israeli Textbooks and Children’s Literature Promote Racism and Hatred Toward Palestinians and Arabs
- Any and all of Trevor’s dispatches
- The BBC’s May 1998 pieces on Israel defending torture in interrogation methods
- the Refuser’s FAQ
- the fact sheet slideshow at Not in My Name
- and the other fact sheets, perspectives, and resources listed on our new links page
