tell it like it is

At another passover dinner the other night at a friend’s house, a couple of the guests were pretty hardcore zionists. The haggadah mentioned numerous ways the US government was screwing over people and the planet, and one of these folks started chiming in about “how it should have also talked about Saddam and the Arabs.” i held my tongue (for the moment). later, i was looking for links on how Saddam was made by the US, and low and behold Democracy Now had excellent coverage of the new investigative research done by Richard Sale. he wrote a piece last week which i’m sure others have been linking to it like crazy, but in case you haven’t seen it, it’s a pretty extensive survey of just how closely “we” were tied with him, and for how long. worth a read.

I do Passover at my parents’ house, where I’m guaranteed to be almost the only person there who is more than mildly critical of Israeli policy. It’s a topic that we tend to studiously avoid…

i hate trying to detail that one beacuse there are so many ways we are connected to the guy.
in detroit, a quote was taken where an arab-american group released a statement to the effect of, “the americans put him in power; it’s about time they take him out.”
no kidding.
p.s. i’ve moved! come see me at the new site.

funny. we avoid the topic for the opposite reason. my parents are avidly anti-zionist, as am i. however, they say all kinds of offensive things in the process of defending their views, such as “you can’t be a jew and not be zionist.” and then go on to ennumerate the ways in which zionists are evil, which include things that have nothing to do with Israel.
