baseball, apple pie, and torture

The fear is even thicker among Muslims in the United States, where the Patriot Act gives police the power to seize the records of any mosque, school, library or community group on mere suspicion of terrorist links. When this intense surveillance is paired with the ever-present threat of torture, the message is clear: You are being watched, your neighbor may be a spy, the government can find out anything about you. If you misstep, you could disappear onto a plane bound for Syria, or into “the deep dark hole that is Guantánamo Bay,” to borrow a phrase from Michael Ratner, president of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

it was rampant long before the recent media flurry, of course at places like corcoran and pelican bay, but this small shedding of some light in the nation mag by naomi klein is well done and right on time.

every once in a while

you run across these writers on the net whose style and content is so refreshing and easy to read and thought-provoking and funny, you just want to get back to writing yourself. and lots of it. all the time. and you remember how good it is for your brain and how much, like aerobic exercise, usually gets you to feeling better about the world and your particular place in it. it’s been too long since i’ve caught up on sarah bunting’s tomato nation, but she always used to make me feel that way. last night i found that the writing of ali davis, aspiring hollywood phony, also gets me thinking and laughing and reinspired like that too (especially with her true porn clerk stories). thanks!

med sku at 16. wow.

among the many highly intelligent things Tori Borland — ubersmart 13-year-old sophomore at Towson University in Maryland — had to say in her recent public chat via the Washingtonian: “All this attention is a little odd…”

ride it out… you go grrl.

watching this weekend

besides the serenity trailer (again, and then again on the big screen. woah.) — the owls are out of the box. chris has got some photos of their pre-flight meanderings in the area around the box. oh, and while we’re on the critter tip, someone i watch at delish linked to these baby squirrels. cute. if you like that sort of thing. which i do. shut up.

jim munroe is my new hero

not only because he wrote and self-publishes these cool books and dvds, not only cuz he did this amazingly inspiring and funny animation called time management for anarchists, not only cuz he organizes these roadshows with poets and performers, but because his video on the similarities between yoga and deathmatch is so funny and poingnant. and i’m not a gamer or a yogi. but i’m inspired. file this under d-i-freakin-y. yay.

owls

we watched mom and dad get started in the new box, then mom taking care of the eggs with food deliveries from dad real regularlike. then the hatchings! wow. and now the four have gotten their wings in gear and are heading off. if you haven’t yet seen Chris’ Eastern Screech Owl Nest Box Cam, go see it soon before all the little ones are gone. but you can look at his highlights there on the news page. bye bye little ones. good luck!

oh hell this is a great plugin

as you see below, i’m just now taking advantage of it, but a while back, marc nozell updated Yet Another Daily del.icio.us hack so that it goes for the whole week. and such a nice hack it is. thanks marc!
