my nephew’s bar mitzvah, the cascadia collectives conference, the fp graduation, and more. on our photo page. for the graduation, i made a cool slideshow and duy and john made an amazing video. now i’m trying to catch up on old emails and letters while recovering from knee surgery.

watching this weekend

besides the serenity trailer (again, and then again on the big screen. woah.) — the owls are out of the box. chris has got some photos of their pre-flight meanderings in the area around the box. oh, and while we’re on the critter tip, someone i watch at delish linked to these baby squirrels. cute. if you like that sort of thing. which i do. shut up.

owls

we watched mom and dad get started in the new box, then mom taking care of the eggs with food deliveries from dad real regularlike. then the hatchings! wow. and now the four have gotten their wings in gear and are heading off. if you haven’t yet seen Chris’ Eastern Screech Owl Nest Box Cam, go see it soon before all the little ones are gone. but you can look at his highlights there on the news page. bye bye little ones. good luck!

catching up, here’s more from our trip:

C-ATL

wow. it’s actually happening. we are taking a genuine vacation. so nice. after too many 30+ hour no-break shifts, the doc really needs this bad, and it’s the longest i’ve been away from the coop since i started. who is this amazing person i get to hang out with now? yum!

welcome back

yep it’s true. action figures is back in action. better than before i think. i’ve moved from moveable type, great as it was, to WordPress, about which i can’t say enough. it rocks my universe. lots more links to add on the side, but i’ve got the setup done (for gecko browsers and IE - let me know if you are seeing it wonky). i can be reached at web at movementbuilding dot o-r-g. stay tuned!

far-flung planets

not that i’ve got any time to now, between work and work on the house, but if i did, playing traveller again would be so fun. after somewhat reluctantly seeing Lord of the Rings, i’m somewhat inspired. in case you never heard of it, traveller was like D&D, only cooler.

Procrastination

So I just took a peek at Residentblog and was reminded that its been about a year since I’ve posted there. Things are pretty different now. There were the Dark Times between April and October where I had six back-to-back intense call months: medicine wards intern, low-risk obstetrics, intensive care unit, high-risk obstetrics, medicine ward as senior resident, a month of night shifts in the ER. Now I am a student again (until January)! I’m going to PSU and working on a masters in public health and its wacky. I’ve got all kinds of final papers due right now. For most of the semester I’ve managed to use the time to become re-centered: I’ve taken up Ashtanga, I’ve been going to the local soto Zendo and I’ve been eating and drinking with AWARENESS. Now with the big-ass turkey day and all, all moderation has gone out the window and I found myself sitting in front of the computer all day eating and drinking and feeling bloatey- topping the day off with WAY too much thai food.

We had a lovely day on Thursday, though, cleaned our house like crazed weasels and had about 20 dear people over.

Here’s what I’d rather be doing than working on my paper:
* Working on my breast-pumping project. I want to put together a zine about women’s experience pumping at the hospital.
* Working on my memoir zine for my writing class with Ariel Gore at the Attic which is going to be all about my internship complete with my dazzling birth haikus!
* Looking into fellowships in addiction medicine and family planning. Fantasizing about a brief sabbatical to New York City.
* Just about anything else.

Well, since I’m not getting anything done I may as well join my husband-guy and friends as they play speed scrabble and drink white russians out in the living room.

renovation nation

i’ve spent too much time in our basement of late. here’s a few of the things, besides working my job-job, that i’ve been obsessed with (and therefore not blogging) since that first week in oct:

  • planning
  • demolition - tore out 5 existing walls
  • TONS of ducting and replacing the ancient grumbling furnace with a super efficiant one
  • recycling old materials: wood, metal, fiberboard, etc.
  • framing new walls for den, office, hallway, garage, and sauna/hot tub area
  • electrical & low voltage pre-wiring
  • setting up and babysitting the drywall crews
  • subfloor
  • ripping out the old staircase.

next comes trim and paint and more flooring, followed by the windows and doors and then moving stuff in. pretty exciting. expect to see more bloggage again soon. and keep yer eyes out for a new contributor to AFSS. won’t ruin the surprise, but it’s gonna rock yer sock. nuf 4 now.

pooches in the pokey

in a recent RAID card snafu this posting got deleted, but here it is again. check out project pooch, one of the groups i raised money for in the ride.

and yes, i’ll be posting all about the ride and updating the page very soon, with photos etc, but lemme just get back to walking first <grin< after 206 miles. whew!

whew.

we’re back. after moving to a new server (biggerbetterfastermore - yay) we had innumerable problems converting the .db and .idx files used by this here moveable type to the correct version. well, ok, i could probably number them but that would be droll.

admin jello was a major help, and ben, creator of MT is my all-time hero for sticking through it, troubleshooting every combersome and confusing step, and finally giving me the sword with which we slew the rabid codebeast: perl -MDB_File -MData::Dumper -e ‘tie %db, “DB_File”, “author.db”, O_RDONLY, 0666, $DB_BTREE; print Dumper keys %db’ wow. take that!

so look forward to more wonderful posts from the e and a and others soon.

’scuse the dust…

making a few changes around here. all will be fixed very soon. thanks.

update: all is basically fixed. the archive pages are still messed, but that will be corrected tonight or so…

found on the street

the web is neato, but the world is cooler. last week on the sidewalk, i found this gem of a piece of notepad paper. i’m going to have to send it in to found magazine.

Mayam’s wishes, wants, dreams and got to haves:
  • Dress shopping
  • 1000 Dragon Ball Z Cards <smiley>
  • Dance lessons
  • martial arts
  • prep for college (Harvard!)
  • 5 pages of report
  • ***Man Shopping!! (w/ a nice chest) <smiley>

best of luck to you, Mayam.

highlights

soon we’ll have photos of recent outings and passover and such. in the meantime, know that it was a month of a lot of activity. lots of sites on the sidebar covered the various amazing antiwar activities that i failed to cover, so check ‘em. also, one great find a pal sent me, which we used parts of in our passover dinner, was the newly revised Love and Justice Haggadah.

plus, in today’s mail arrived a book we’ve been so so excited about: The Garden of Vegan! my first glance got me pretty psyched for hitting the kitchen later this week. yumaliciousness awaits.

some of the best anti-war and progressive links you’ve never heard of are collected over at Rob Brezsny’s Web of Allies.

back in the blogosphere

crazy long time that i’ve been both super bizzy with other stuff, and somewhat uninspired. but i’m back

listening to the new KRS-1 (which is a trip) and an This is Acid Jazz collection, i just did a bunch a reorganization and knocked out 69 new links. Whew!

hoops are for jumping through

many of you know that i recently wrangled extensively with a major state bureaucracy, the staff of which put me in a deep quandary, which led to a giant career shift.

well, as bureaucracy is the one true constant in the universe, i am being hassled with again in a number of ways: the awesome technology education program at oregon state university has accepted me with open arms, based on my many years in tech work and my work with high-school students when i was coordinating and working with PARC (and other requirements i’ve met). yet the graduate school has rejected my application for admission out of hand, without review, due to my “non-standard” transcript from the college where i got my B.A., Western Institute for Social Research. like UC Santa Cruz, they don’t issue letter grades. so, to get accepted to OSU, one must have letters of advocacy, layers of appeal to different committees, yada yada yada.

hopes are high that they will soon see their way clear to allowing me to study there (well, here, as the program is all on the web and my practicum experience will be at an awesome alternative magnet school here in p-town). the other agency i’m back-and-forthing with is the state teacher standards & practices commission, as they balked at my having been arrested at a demonstration (in SF) back in 1997. now i’ve got to get records from first the cops, then the courts, get things notarized, etc, etc, and show that everything’s been discharged, expunged, or otherwise thrown out. now i bet you need a nap. i’ll let you know when it’s all over.

speaking of letting us know, S, where’s the blog?

ooh! ooh! almost time!

for my great aunt Sarah’s Gooseberry pie, the recipe for which my grandma Bhamba wrote down for me to pass along to the family. well, welcome to the family…

sprinkle over berries until well blended, pour into pie crust & dot w/ 1 TBLS butter (or your flavorite vegan alternative)

  • let stand 15 minutes
  • cover w/ crust
  • bake in hot oven (450 degrees) for 10 mins then reduce heat to 350 degrees
  • bake until golden brown, about 40 minutes
